Charles Uibel Scientists find patterns in Utah's wet-dry cycles

http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_13681950?source=rv A team studied long-suspected patterns against temperature measurements, precipitation readings, tree-ring data and levels. They looked at data that goes back nearly 1,000 years, discovering a powerful relationship between sea-surface temperatures in a specific area of the Pacific Ocean and the rainfall and snowfall in northern Utah. The 12-year cycle is like an echo… Continue

Charles Uibel For Sale: Train car!

Wally Wright, the man who owns the property near Saltair on which the Water Slide and Train car sit, is actively looking to have the stuff removed as soon as possible. So long, great photo location! IMHO, the area needs a nice location out there in which the general public can safely take pictures of people near Great Salt Lake - Even if there is a monetary charge to do so. Black Rock is not that pretty, and it's too small. There is plenty of room.. It would be nice to see such a place develop… Continue

Charles Uibel Sand May Be 5th State of Matter: Study

Sand exhibits so many unexplainable physical properties that some think granularity is a form of matter unto itself, Wired reports. Granular matter acts like a solid, a liquid, or a gas depending on the circumstance. “You walk on the beach, and the sand supports your weight,” said physicist Heinrich Jaeger. “Pick up a handful, and it runs through your fingers, like a liquid. But you can’t walk on water.” A recent study of the physics of falling sand shows the grains forming into droplets like w… Continue

Charles Uibel The Benefit of Having Your Photos Stolen

Is that not your goal, to have your photos seen by as many people as possible, and to bring people's attention back to you and your work? IMHO the person responsible for the theft of Great Salt Lake images that was discovered last week on Flickr was probably as naive as many of us have been about having our own photos stolen. He or she did not understand or apply Flickr's Terms of Service which says that any Flickr photo may be used anywhere on the web as long as it links back to the original… Continue

Charles Uibel Showing your artwork: Quick list of things to do

Here's a beginner's quick list of things to do to prepare your photographs for showing at a simple artists fair such as the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival. Print using standard sizes at between 200 and 300 dpi: 5x7 8x10 11x14 Yes, that means you have to crop; too bad. Paper is everything, but printing at costco works great. Print landscapes on semi-gloss at costco. Or send it to a printer like Borge.net ($$). Do it over the net, then go pic them up. Then go to Michael's Crafts or Reuel's and… Continue

Charles Uibel Stolen Photos!

Today i noticed that a website http://www.timelessearth.net/?p=15542 had posted a crop of great salt lake photos. Yet I many of them I recognized from flickr, coming from several photogs. Since this was likely not legit, I emailed as many photographers as I could, and questioned the authors at the web site. It is a strong argument for watermarking your photos. At least if they are stolen, they can be an advertisement for your photography or ev… Continue

Charles Uibel Full Moon Hike April

The nine of us had a great full moon hike at Stansbury Island. We joined up at 6 and got to the top of the hill about 7. The full moon came up about an hour after sunset, right over downtown salt lake city, and the snowy wasatch mountains. A few people didn;t come becuase the cloud cover made it difficult to predict whether the moon would be visible, and we were losing a little hope ourselves. As we made our way down the mountain before it got too dark, the moon rose, while we were still high en… Continue
